Shelter Island is an 8,000 acre town at the eastern end of Long Island, roughly 90 miles east of New York City
It forms the tip of Suffolk County and sits between the agricultural North Fork of Long Island and the chic summer holiday spots in the Hamptons on the South Fork. The population is approximately 2,500. Shelter Island can be reached by shuttle ferries from both Greenport and North Haven, north of Sag Harbor. It should be noted that approximately 1/3 of the island is Mashomack Preserve, a Nature Conservancy property that is protected in perpetuity.
