I did my first soak last night in the outdoor tub, and it was sublime. The Wetstyle tub is incredibly comfortable with that great back rest, and it is big. Plenty of room to move, stretch, shift positions, etc. And it is deep. A real soak can be had in this tub. Could even accommodate another person. Thank you Wetstyle for coming up with this beautiful design.

I should also mention that Pat defeated me in an epic best-of-five round of pool at the Chequit Inn on Saturday night. He made an incredible comeback, returning from a 0-2 deficit, by winning three consecutive games. Ouch.

Reading through Steve's post I was reminded that the courtyard really became a courtyard when one of my colleagues, just in passing, suggested that we consider moving the garage door to the rear side of the garage. This got the garage door away from the front entry, and really created an outdoor room that would serve as the first entry space as you approach the house. I always say, "Good ideas come from all kinds of places."

Split decision in Red Hook on this one. Rachel grew up in a Martha's Vineyard home that had a vaulted ceiling in really supports that decision. On the other hand, I like the clean more minimal look that draws the eyes to the water. Either way, you are going to win.

Absolutely. We are either going to use a EPDM membrane, torch down, or possibly fiberglass, which might be the winner. In essence, it would become a bathtub with a pitch in it.

I will try to upload a short video file of it in the rain. what a day!

This seems fairly complex, from an engineering standpoint. Water is the ultimate enemy of any building, so sealing is of utmost importance, I imagine.

Glad that you enjoyed it!
On Shelter, a couple of weeks ago, you were describing the quality of inside-outside space and the seamless 'flow' from beach, to garden, to kitchen table. Essentially inclusive design that is free and not rigid, which considers the context and usage above all else.
In the episode, i noted the discussion of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and how the architects "thought of the building first and then the books and the reader." Funny how on such a high-profile project, they ignored solar heat gain and therefore let prized books bake in the sun.

I am a long time super fan of Stewart Brand, and seeing this was a treat. It provides a lot of food for thought as it relates to Gimme Shelter for me - as an architect owner occupant who has spent the last few years imagining how the house will work, how it will be used, how it will look (new and over time), and of course, how it will be maintained. I also spend a lot of time projecting how the spaces will feel to me when i am in different locations - inside, outside, coming and going to the garden, lying in bed, standing at the kitchen sink, etc. I also have the advantage of having lived with the old structure for almost a decade - during which time the inclination to change the building developed, largely motivated by watching bathtubs rot out, windows cloud, sliders no longer roll easily and roof leaks starting . . .

But what watching this film clip did was remind me of Brand and The Whole Earth Catalogue, Sim Van der Ryn and Sea Ranch and Christopher Alexander and his book A Pattern Language. These men, their ideas, their publications and their work were the guiding lights of my late teens and twenties.

Thanks Nick for the memory jolt!
